The Brookdale Club was established in 1920 by prominent Bay Area women making Brookdale their summer home. The original clubhouse was the Capwell Pavilion on the Capwell family estate on Huckleberry Island. A permanent clubhouse was built in 1926. The Club was to provide an entertaining social life for the summer vacationers, both adult and children, limiting membership to property owners approved by a membership committee. From June to September the women members met for regular social meetings interspersed with Saturday night dances for the young people, and weekend social events. By 1949, enough people were permanent residents of Brookdale to ensure year-round meetings. The collection is a record of club activities and includes memberships lists and many images of social events.
